Attendee Comments

An excellent event, from the location, the staff at the museum, the catering, the speakers, and the networking.  I brought home four pages of notes to follow up on and use for my own round table.  Enjoyed meeting you, Mike.

It was good to see you in Harrisburg at Congress #2.  Once again there were a lot of ideas/suggestions from both the presenters and the attendees -- plenty of things to think about.  I know the reps from our CWRT plan to get together to go over our notes before our next Executive Board meeting.  All the attendees I spoke with seemed pleased with the conference agenda, location, etc.  Look forward to hearing about Congress #3.

I honestly can't think of a way on how to improve the the Congress of Civil War Round Tables for 2018.  Great Agenda!  Great People!  And, most of all, the Greatest of Venues.  The National Civil War Museum couldn't have been a better choice.  This one is going to be hard to top. Thanks for a great weekend.

I thought it was an excellent event.  The location was excellent.  The Friday night reception was excellent.  I liked how there was time to talk and mingle followed by the behind the scenes tour with several very interesting items and documents exhibited.  I thought the presentation by Chris Mackowski was the best one-hour presentation on a battle I’ve ever seen.  He was excellent.  All of the presenters on Saturday were very interesting and informative.  I really liked how the day concluded with a panel discussion and how questions were submitted to the presenters.  That was an innovative practice that really worked well.  The book signings and social time with authors was very interesting.  I really enjoyed talking with several, most significantly Chris Mackowski, Richard Sommers, and Jeffry Wert.  Lastly, the Sunday Gettysburg tour was a great way to end the weekend.

The only room for improvement would be in the food.  The quality was just OK but the quantity for the Saturday morning breakfast was not enough.  I arrived for breakfast about 8:30 and very little food was left other than plain bagels.

Thank you for all of the time it must have taken to organize this.  Also thank you for introducing me to your colleagues and for the ride to/from Gettysburg.

It was a great conference and it was nice to meet you!

In recent months I have been introduced to the Civil War Roundtable community through invitations from these groups to speak about my most recent research. The CWRT Congress, too, was a new experience and opportunity to converse with people who share a passion for exploring, interpreting and preserving Civil War history.

The sessions were informative and engaging, as were the interactions with exceptionally friendly attendees from across the country. The environment fostered networking and the exchange of information, ideas, etc. The National Civil War Museum was an excellent venue and promoted additional learning opportunities, including the tour of the archives and collection.

I suggest that future Congress meetings be held in or near similar venues that provide access to archives, collections, and Civil War/Civil War themed sites.

Time well spent.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Congress so much. Learned alot of new stuff, got re enforcement of ideas I had considered previously and our RT is already implementing some with full approval of the BOD and those members I have visited with also want to begin them.

Our annual trip was to Chancellorsville a few years ago and Chris's presentation I could see the battle very well in my mind. Polly is contacting him about a program for us. She also got another speaker from the event as well.

I have contacted Matt about ordering some of his books. The Fairfield hotel was nice and the food that was provided at the conference was over the top.

My only regret was I didn't take my own phone on the "Behind the Scene's" tour and have my picture taken with Quantrill's gun. Our RT is having their fall trip there in Oct. so I may get another chance.

Hoping to go to Spotsylvania next year.

Thought the Congress went well and having at The Civil War Museum in Harrisburg was a big plus.  My hats off to Wayne and his staff for hosting the event.  I believe the greatest part of the Congress is being able to network with all who attended the Congress. The speakers were good and I believe the program was better than last years. Hopefully, the Congress can go on for years to come. Moving it around to different locations will be beneficial to all CWRT's. This way new faces and ideas and more networking. I know for some folks it's the cost of traveling that hurts attendance.

This was a most wonderful and helpful event.  We have already started to implement a number of ideas that came from the Congress, including:
  • Rack cards – we actually started this back in May for this coming speaker season
  • Newspaper articles in local papers – first interview coming up in 30 minutes from now
  • Developing a group of advisors to help get around those in official positions, but who are naysayers to making any changes.
  • Exploring non-profit status
  • Rethinking how we should treat former members who no longer can attend rather than just scratching them off the dues membership sheet
  • Developing a Mission Statement and going back to review our Constitution
  • Developing more inviting follow-up to “guests” who first attend our meetings

It was a great setting and having Wayne give of his and of his staff time as well as space for us, was most special.   We became members of the Museum while there too.

Thank you for organizing and bringing the volunteers and speakers together.  Well done.

We attended last year and enjoyed it. This year I totally LOVED every minute of it! We now have friends from other states that I was thrilled to see again. This July I was able to tell Ed Bearss “I now know Wally from North Carolina”. Last July when Ed asked me “Do you know Wally? “ I had to say no. A Huge Thank You to all that worked so hard to make this possible for all of us. I can’t wait for next year!
